Before you can drive on a public road or take your theory test, you will need a valid Provisional Driving Licence. You can apply online from the official ‘Gov UK‘ site.
Changes to driving licences came into effect on 8th June 2015 so that driving licences now consists of simply the photocard. Details regarding endorsements, penalty points and driving bans will no longer be recorded on the driving licence, but will be accessible online instead.
Information You Must Provide Before Your First Lesson
Your Driving Instructor is required to check your licence details before your first lesson to see which vehicles you’re allowed to drive and to check for penalty points and disqualifications.
To access, view and share your licence details you will need to visit
https://www.gov.uk/view-driving-licence
You will need to enter:
- Your licence number
- Your national insurance number
- Your postcode
Once you have entered this information, click ‘Share your licence information‘.
This creates a code. The code is case sensitive and is valid for 21 days.
Forward this code to your Driving Instructor together with the last 8 characters of your driving licence so that your instructor can check your licence details ahead of your first lesson.
Please note that it is your responsibility to provide proof that you have a valid licence to drive before your first lesson.
